Alathiyur Hanuman Temple in Malappuram

Malappuram district is in Kerala which is situated in the southern part of India. The capital of the city is Malappuram and was formed in 1969. Alathiyur, famous as the Govinda Bhattathiri, was born here; he was a legendary of the astrological traditions of Kerala.


Alathiyur is also famous for the Hanuman Temple which is said to have been built some 3000 years ago. The social and economical development of the district mainly depends on the income of the Keralites employed in the “gulf”. The district has a vast collection of wildlife, small hills, forests, little rivers and streams flowing towards the west, backwaters and the plantations.

Though Alathiyur Hanuman Temple is also dedicated to Lord Rama, the presiding deity and his brother Lakshmana, it is famous as a Hanuman temple. The legend of the region goes by that the “Purumthrikkovil idol” of lord Hanuman was consecrated by one of the saptarishis, Sage Vasistha.

The temple was governed by Grama Namboodiri. Then it was taken over by Vattath Raja. During the Zamorin rule in Kozhikode, the Zamorin Raja took over the administration of the temple and till date it is governed by His Highness Zamorin Raja of Kozhikode.

The temple of Hanuman is adjacent to the main temple of Lord Rama and lord Hanuman stands a little leaning to the left to hear his master’s voice. Apart from the deities of Lords Rama and Hanuman, the temple also has Lakshmana, Ganapathi, Mahavishnu, Bhagavathi and Iyappa.

Sree Hanuman of Alathiyur is also the darling guardian of children and all the children before going to bed pray to Lord Hanuman for a good sleep. It is also believed that Lord Hanuman also relieves one of mental agonies and fulfils their desires. There is also a platform which is kept to commemorate Sree Hanuman’s mighty leap to Lanka with granite at one end of the platform which is considered to be the sea. Devotees who visit the temple leap over this long stone and it is believed that this will bring good health and good life for their children.

The main offering to Sree Hanuman is wet avil and kadalai plantain.

There was a time when the temple was struggling to perform even daily poojas. But the temple management’s immense discipline and the faith and ever-growing support of the devotees made this temple quite popular. Today, it has become an important place for spiritual rejuvenation. People from all walks of life, with different background and various leaders who are in public life from all over the world throng to this temple to seek the blessings of Sree Hanuman.

How to Reach Alathiyur Hanuman Temple

The temple is 1.5 km from Alathiyur and 12 Kms from Tirur.

Nearest Railway Station: From the Tirur Railway Station head towards south-east on tirur-thrikandiyoor Road and at AR Bakery continue onto Tirur-Malappuram-Manjeri Road and pass the Mannil Building on the left then turn left at Thazhe Palam onto Tirur-Chamravattom Road/Tirur-Ponnani Road and walk past the Bharat Petroleum on the left then again turn left onto Panjanpadic-Hanumankavu temple road after walking for 900m turn left at Panjanpadi-Hanumankavu Temple Road and stay on Panjanpadic-Hanumankavu Temple Road and at 450m take the first left onto Hanumankavu-Musliyarangadi Road and the destination will be on the left.

Nearest Bus Depot: From the Alathiyur bus stop head towards north on Tirur-Chamravattom Road/Tirur-Ponnani Road in the direction of Alathiyoor-Kodakkal Road and you will find Capital Furniture on the left at 900 m walk past that and take the second right onto Panhanpadic-Hanumankavu Temple Road after walking for 900 m turn left at Panjanpadi-Hanumankavu temple road and stay on to Panjanpadic-Hanumankavu Temple Road and take the first left at Hanuman Kavu-Musliyarangadi Road and you will find the temple on the left side.

Nearest Airport: From the Karipur Airport head west on International Terminal Road then turn right onto Calicut Airport Road and then you have to pass by the Indian Coffee House situated on the left and take the first left then after walking for 650m take turn left and at 1.4 Km take the first left towards Parappanangadi-Areekode Road and turn right at Tharayittal onto parappanangadi-Areekode Road and on the left pass the Aided Muslim LP School then continue onto Edapally-Panvel Highway/Malappuram-Parappanangadi Road and continue to follow Edapally-Panvel Highway and go through one roundabout and walk past the Koolath petrol pump on the left side after which turn right onto Karingapara Road and pass the Salafi Masjid situated on the left then turn right onto Tirur-Malappuram-Manjeri Road and go through two roundabouts and pass the petrol pump Talakadatur on the right and turn left at Thazhe Palam onto Tirur-Chamaravattom Road/Tirur-Ponnani Road and pass the Bharat Petroleum situated on the left. Then take the left on to Panjanpadic-Hanumankavu temple Road and again turn left at Panjanpadi-Hanumankavu Temple Road and stay on the same road itself after walking for about 450m take the first left onto Hanumankavu-Musliyarangadi road and the temple will be on the left.
